History

The history of Mar Athanasius College Association started when some forward thinking people like M. Varkey and M. P. Vargheese thought about setting up a college in Kothamangalam, largely an educationally backward area then, in the earlier part of 1950s. They put up a concerted effort to realize their dream despite many hardships and Mar Athanasius College Association was formed in the year 1953 with the objective of forming a higher education center in Kothamangalam.

The first meeting of its board of governors was held on 30th August 1953. The meeting elected His Grace Paulose Mar Philexinos as the Chairman of the Association, Dr. P.T. Thomas as Vice-Chairman, Sri P.J. Varkey as Treasurer, and Sri. M.P. Varghese as Secretary. Fr. Issac V. Maliyil, Sri. N.M. Chacko and Sri. Kottalil P. Abraham were elected as Executive Committee Members.

Mar Athanasius College is the first college started under the umbrella of MACA. The college was started with intermediate classes in 1955 and was formally inaugurated on 30 October, 1956 by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, the Emperor of Ethopia. Mar Athansius College Association founded four more educational institutions - Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Mar Athanasius International School, Mar Baselios College and Mar Baselios College of Teacher Education.
