M.P. Varghese is one of the greatest educationists the State has ever seen, who brought innovative thinking into the educational sector. Prof. Varghese was born on 29 June 1922 as the son of Mr. Poulose and Mrs. Acha in Manjummekudiyil family at Chelad. Mr. Varghese had his school education at St. George School (Kothamangalam), M.G.M. High School (Kuruppampady), and St. Johns School (Vadakara). He graduated from the Union Christian College (Aluva) in 1945 securing first place in Economics Theory. He took his Master’s Degree in Economics from Madras Christian College in 1947 and the M. Litt. Degree from the Madras University in 1951.

Prof. Varghese joined the faculty of Economics in Mar Athanasius College in 1955. In 1963, he became the Head of Department of Economics in Mar Athanasius College. He held the posts of HOD of Economics and the Principal of the Mar Athanasius College from 1963 to 1982 with a break of 3 years from 1969 to 1972 and retired in 1982. He also excelled as a writer and has published four books – A Criticism of Keynes’ General Theory, Theory of Economic Potential and Growth, a Critique of Nuclear Programme, The Law of Land Acquisition and Compensation – A Criticism.

He was a prominent presence in public life. Varghese was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1952 at the age of 29. He has been in the forefront of many political issues including the agitation against Nuclear Plant in Kerala. He was a strong advocate for self financing colleges and formed the Organisation for Promotion of Technical Education in Kerala. He also fought for just and fair compensation for farmers whose land and properties were acquired by the state.

Though his contributions are multi faceted and can not be confined to any single arena, his contribution as an educationist is beyond comparison. He is a pioneer in the field of establishing institutions of higher education and will go down in history as the architect of MACA.
